Never played 3x3

3x3, explained

One hoop, half court, three on three. If you play pickup you already know most of this, so here is only the part that changes.

Two minutes, every rule demonstrated. Read the list below if you would rather not watch.

Scoring

  • Inside the arc is 1 point. Behind the arc is 2.
  • The arc is whatever three-point line is painted on the floor.
  • First team to 17 wins. The championship game goes to 21.

Shot clock

  • 12 seconds. Get it up.

Getting the ball in play

  • Coin flip to start. No jump ball.
  • After a made basket there is no inbound and no whistle. Whoever got scored on picks the ball up under the hoop and takes it out behind the arc, and the defense cannot come get it under there.
  • Defensive rebound or a steal: clear the ball behind the arc before you shoot. Offensive rebound: put it straight back up.
  • Held ball goes to the defense.
  • Any dead ball restarts with a check at the top.
  • Subs come in off the endline, no whistle needed.

Fouls

  • Nobody fouls out.
  • Fouled while shooting: free throws. Fouled anywhere else: your ball, check it up top.

Your team

  • Rosters of 3–5. 3 on the court, no coaches.
  • Saturday is pool play, Sunday is brackets. Every team plays both days.
  • Ages 16 and up. Players 16 and 17 need a guardian signature.

More to watch

  • Top 10 3x3 plays of all time — why anyone cares.
  • Top 10 plays of 2025 — same, but recent.
  • A full World Cup final — what a whole game looks like.
  • The Paris 2024 women's final — it is an Olympic sport.

Everything we did not print is in the official FIBA 3x3 rulebook. Our games run FIBA 3x3-style, adapted to a high school gym: same play, house scoring at 17.
